Ammunition and Its Types and Storage
Ammunition is a projectile to be fired from a gun. It is any nuclear or chemical or biological material that can be used as a weapon of mass destruction. Articles used in charging firearms and ordnance of all kinds; as powder, balls, shot, shells, percussion caps, rockets, etc; Any stock of missiles, literal or figurative. Ammunition generally referred to as ammo, meaning the assembly of projectile and propellant.
The design of ammunition is based on the purpose it should serve; anti-personnel ammunition is often designed to break up or tumble inside the target, in order to maximize the damage done. Anti-personnel shells contain shrapnel and are designed to explode in mid-air, so its fragments will spread over a large area. Armor-piercing ammunition seems to be hard, sharp and narrow, often with lubrication. Tracer ammunition emits light as it travels, allowing the person using the gun to see the path of bullets in fight while using a machine gun.
The storage of ammunition is an important task. An ammunition dump or ammo dump is a military storage facility for live ammunition and explosives. The storage of ammunition and explosives is very dangerous. There is a chance or accidents in unloading, packing and transfer; the threat because of it should not be neglected and care must be taken otherwise there is chance for poorly stored explosives to degrade and become shock-sensitive by time.
The typical ammunition dump will have several elements like a buffer zone, perimeter security, guards, bunkers, blast barriers, safety distances, loading area, flooding system, ammunition repair facility or workshop and destruction area.
A Buffer zone is a cleared area of at least several hundred feet surrounding the facility, in the event of an explosion. Perimeter security is like a fence, which avoids access by unauthorized persons. Guards are for safety from enemy forces during potential threat. Bunkers are a place where ammunition is stored under lock ad key. Blast barriers are buried pits to divert the force of blast when ammunition detonates. Safety distances are the distances maintained between the outside infrastructure and the storage sites. A Loading area is for transfer of ammunition to and from trucks, ships etc. A flooding system in large facilities to put out a fire or prevent an explosion in ammunition stored area. An Ammunition Repair Facility or workshop facility is used for the repair; breakdown, inspection, and manufacture of ammunition held within Depot. A Destruction Area is used for the disposal by burning of defective, surplus, or obsolete ammunition and explosives.
