Is it legal to own a fully automatic assault rifle in the U.S, If yes then what states?
Well I’ve seen people talk about that they have a grade III license and that they can own a fully automatic assault rifle. Look at this video for example

So, is it legal in any state?
And can you own it without a federal license?
I think it’s legal (with the Class III permit) in about 36 states.
The permit itself is inexpensive, but from a practical sense, it is not a cheap proposition. You need to go through an extensive background check, your local sheriff or police chief needs to sign your application, then there is the cost of the guns (currently $15,000 to $75,000, since only certain weapons can be transferred, no new ones are eligible) and ammunition. Add to that the fact that many ranges won’t allow rapid fire of semi-autos let alone full-auto, so you need at least 100 acres, away from other people in order to be able to shoot. There are also security and liability issues. Go to Vegas if you want to shoot full auto, they have a range where you can shoot all sorts of guns, it will cost you about $100 – $500 for the ammo depending how much fun you want to have.

And I agree with the others “assault rifle” (in post WWII usage) describes what a weapon looks like, not how it functions.
