What is the best caliber gun for a women to conceal and carry?
I am looking for my first conceal carry gun. I have several that I take to the range, but I want a nice compact gun with very very little recoil… any suggestions

my favorite that I own is the baby 9, i was thinking more of a 380 or a 32 or something like that…. but sounds like 9’s are common to carry?
From all you said I think the Baby 9 might be your best choice without having to purchase a new gun, my rationale is below.
Having both “very very little recoil” and “GOOD defensive power” is difficult. Ultimately the best caliber for self-defense is “The largest caliber you are comfortable with.” Are you comfortable with your ability to hold, operate and shoot the gun? If the gun does not fit in your hand welll or you are unable to comfortably shoot it then you will cut into your practice time. You also need to be able to operate the gun, many women like the Kahr 9, because it fits well in the hand but the slide spring is very tight and the slide cannot be pulled back and locked in place easily. If you have a failure when defending yourself you MUST be able to rack that slide. Remember shooting is a perishible skill and needs to be practiced on a regular basis too – you mentioned that you don’t like the 38 special which tells me you should not carry this gun. Also are you comfortable lugging this gun around all day? If it is too heavy you are less likely to carry it.
.32 and .22 are lower powered guns with less recoil and are likely ineffective if you have an attacker who is high or is wearing heavy clothing – they simply will not get the job of ‘Stopping the Threat’ accomplished effectively. You may kill your attacker with a .22 but he may kill you back before he sucumbs to his/her injuries.
.380 – the debate rages on and on, but ultimately it does not have GOOD stopping power. This can be an effective round IF the attacker is not wearing a heavy jacket, allowing the round to penetrate effectively and if you shoot accurately. Also, it typically has a lower round count. However, most gun fights do not have a high round count, people simply don’t tend to hang around when you start shooting at them, so round count is a lower priority than the other items I mentions above. It may outwardly seem like a good comprimise between recoil and power but a .380 because of it’s blowback design and small frame doesn’t necessarily have less recoil. My SIG 230SL is far more punishing than the Beretta 92FS. Also right now a .380 is a bad choice because finding ammunition to carry and practice with is VERY difficult. If you are thinking of a .380 try to test one before making an investment and be aware of the difficulties finding ammunition.
Be sure to also get a quality holster and use quality ammunition (Hollow Points)
