Dianetics Scientology

Is Scientology as bad as everyone says it is?
I am wondering if Scientology is as bad as everyone says it is. I mean I looked at the Church Of Scientology site and FZAO International and they do not seem bad. Plus Ive actually read Dianetics and it seems pretty alright. I mean I dont know that much about scientology but from what I learned as long as you dont join the “official” church its just like any other religion.
Depends on whether one is speaking about the church of Scientology or the subject. (and, no, one doesn’t get “kicked out of the church” for losing ones’ job. However, having no money means one cannot buy CofS services which are pricey. And the organization is very sales driven so it would be a problem in other ways)
If you look at some of the other questions, open and resolved, you’ll see a number of descriptions of things the Church of Scientology has done to its members and to its detactors. Staff members are put in a situation just like indentured servitude. Some are pushed into having abortions, betraying friends, leaving family, etc.
The underlying philosphy and methodology can be fun and interesting in many respects, but pursuing it in the church of Scientology is problematic because the church will suck every last dime out of its members if it possibly can. Not just for auditing (their counselling) and courses, but also for fundraisers and buildings (google Super Power Building + Scientology) that don’t even get built. Or “ideal orgs” for new locations for Scn centers that don’t always even get used.
Scientology, as an ology, can be and is practiced by a number of people outside CofS (google Free Zone + Scientology for more info. Plus there are spinoffs that do not mention Scientology and Hubbard specifically) . I personally don’t see any problem with it, though I will say there are some of Hubbard’s prejudices and rationalizations for treating people the way the cult does within the “scriptures” but it’s easy enough to spot those things and not bother with them. I have talked to a lot of people about this since I’m active on critical message boards and so on and I do know that some people feel that the actual philosophy of Scientology is problematic since it gave rise to the problems in the cult. They do have a point but not everyone agrees with them. Those of us who don’t are sometimes jovially accused of practicing “Scientology lite”.
FZAO is part of the Freezone. They don’t have the staff contracts, slavery, high prices, enforced abortions, familial “disconnections” and so on. But as I said, some people disagree with them, too, feeling that they are perpetrating and purveying a system Hubbard wrote to hurt people. My own thought on it is that an underlying idea can be turned to good or ill.
