Oak Brush
A question about odd leaf coloration on oak trees…?
There are two very large oak trees in front of the building I work in. They are about 20-25 feet apart, their branches barely brush each other in the middle. I find this very weird: Both of their leaves are a very bright, springy green color on their southern half, but a very dull, foresty green on the northern half. It’s a very noticeable difference. They are in full sunlight most of the day, they aren’t close to the building or any other trees, so it’s not shadow. Is this normal? I’ve never noticed it in other trees before. What could make their leaves be half one color, half another?
Is it an evergreen oak? Or did it loose it’s leaves this winter. The south side of the tree has received much more sunlight as the sun has been far south in the sky, this might have caused the southern branches to break dormancy earlier than the northern side which would account for the bright spring green while the older leaves have the darker color.
